Bob Menendez is Corrupt

Feels like this indictment may have some teeth.  I rather doubt that the Justice Department would bother with a weak case against Menendez.

is this irony?

Not intentional.

this case looks strong from what they've shown. But the DOJ brought a pretty weak case against him last time.

Wasn't there some high court ruling around that time that made it harder to for prosecutors to win corruption cases?

Yes, McDonnell v. United States, 579 U.S. 550 (2016), which basically held that unless you can show that the government official took some sort of official (meaning that it had legal import as opposed to "just helping out a friend"), you couldn't get a conviction.

Well, there goes Trump's talking point that the DOJ is a political mafia or whatever term he uses.

And why the half mil hidden in HIS clothes and around the house and only 70k in HER safe deposit box? Someone isn't communicating in that household.

because she had the bars of gold that weighed about a kilo each… she’s smarter than him

Has anybody spoken out in his defense?  You would think that after his previous close call with corruption charges that he would have mended his ways. I guess he can’t help himself.

Menendez pulling the Latino-American card, what a joke.

Please NJ, get rid of this guy for good. He is an embarrassment, as corrupt as the day is long.

Kyle Jasey, CHS grad and son of retiring local Assemblywoman Mila Jasey, announced his candidacy against Menendez in August:

I believe that our current representative’s multiple scandals make him unfit to serve

But of course inexperienced nepotism is the absolute last thing that we need.

Bob wants to talk with the public today.

U.S. Senator Bob Menendez will hold a press conference on Monday morning in Hudson County, where he grew up and where he launched his political career as a 20-year-old school board member, making his first public comments since his indictment on federal corruption charges on Friday.

Menendez is not expected to resign, but rather take a defiant stand against the allegations against him, the New Jersey Globe has learned. Indeed, he is expected to double-down and say he plans to seek re-election in 2024, even if he needs to run off the organization line.

Tracking every Democrat who has called for Bob Menendez’s resignation

From yahooyahoo's quote: "U.S. Senator Bob Menendez will hold a press conference on Monday morning in Hudson County"

On a weakly related note, was it Governor Kean who said he wanted to be buried in Hudson County so he could remain active in politics?

It was Brendan Byrne.

and that joke is a lot less funny now that we have a major political party seriously charging that Democrats are committing voter fraud on a mass basis.

Guess again.
“Trumpist pundits began laying out explanations for how Menendez’s indictment actually buttresses their politicization canard on Friday, as New Jersey’s Democratic leaders lined up to call for his resignation. Based on no evidence whatsoever, right-wingers suggested that Biden and Garland ordered Menendez’s prosecution for partisan reasons, either to create the ‘appearance of impartiality’ so they could continue persecuting Trump or in retaliation for Menendez’s hawkish foreign policy views. ”

I called Bob's Washington number this morning to urge him to resign but they were not answering the phones and the mailbox was full.  I called his Jersey City number ((973) 645-3030) and got voice mail.

To be fair, I have never gotten a person when I've called his office in the past.  On top of being a crook, he has lousy constituent services, a pale shadow of what you get when you call Senator Booker's office.

Biden and Garland are doing a reverse Vizzini

There's the tiniest voice in me that is saying "it's a set-up: this is way too weird".  But then there are so many other bent pols found accepting envelopes of cash, often in sting operations. Even if a set-up and he took the bait he's still guilty. Looks like it's going to trial. He probably always has to insist on his innocence to protect the Robert Menendez name, as there's a Robert Menendez Jr, who I believe took senior's job in the House.

When I posted that I had the feeling I would be wrong.

Menendez's son holds his hold House seat.

As for whether it's a set-up - Senator Harrison Williams of NJ was taken down in "Abscam", where fake Arab sheiks bribed members of Congress.  Is Menendez going to try to claim that fake Egyptian businessmen were giving him the cash? According to the FBI, the fingerprints of one of them was found on an envelope with cash, in Menendez's home - which shoots down his "I got it at the ATM" defense.

More nepotism. Perfect.

was an ATM in Cairo, he couldn’t read the machine and he asked the guy next in line for help.
He’s done this time, but of course he’s got the Brazilian nut wrapped in a red foil supporting him.

It's nice to see our local leaders speak out.

What about Mila Jasey, John McKeon, and Richard Codey?

I’m with Vic…

“Sadly, Menendez is in the same class as Representative George Santos and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas,” wrote De Luca. “Each has put his self enrichment ahead of the interests of the people. With a 51-49 Senate, we Democrats cannot risk losing a seat in 2024 and need strong representation now to fight the radical right in Washington. Robert Menendez will have his day in court and should focus on preparing a rigorous defense. At the same time, New Jersey needs a full time Senator who will work for us. Menendez should do the right thing and resign.”

A prominent politician in the US Federal Government is corrupt.  How is this even a story?
