Amazon Placing Packages in Garbage Cans

Because people didn't know it was there. Now there is a note directing them to i

No, because people who want to steal don't want to be noticed. The chance of being noticed is increased, in most settings, by going to the garage or backyard (after reading a notice on the front door).

This seems obvious. I'm struggling to understand your complaint.

This is nothing new. . . UPS has been putting notes on our door saying "On Porch" for years.

cant' wait for drone deliveries, do you think drones can open garbage can covers or do you think its more likely we'll all have to use ladders to pull our packages off our roofs?

I have no complaint. I rarely order from Amazon. Just seems like a dumb plan.

If I don't want to be caught, carrying a boxed package off the front steps, in full view of the world seems dumber than going around the side (a very short distance in our neighborhoods), opening box out of view, sticking in pocket or backpack and moving along.

The package in full view on the front porch is the attraction to stop in the first place. Without it being there, the thief has no reason to stop at that house.

If you order a drone from Amazon, do they ship it in a box, or does the drone just land on your front porch? grin

I guess it would depend if you ordered it new or used.

UPS sends me an email within minutes of a package showing up at my door. I think replacing the doortag with an email (or text) would be helpful.

Interesting idea. Have a clean garbage can behind the house just for package deliveries. The trick is getting a) the delivery person to know which one to use and b) the trash removers to know not to take that one. All while c) preventing ne'er-do-wells from realizing it's a decoy.

Yes, in the past. A new concept is a note on the door possibly telling you your package is in the trash can= open invitation to steal

I mentioned this above as well. This is not a new concept. . . UPS has been putting notes on our front door for years saying "On Porch." The only new concept here is that the amazon delivery service is placing the packing in garbage cans.

Actually, Amazon does that too, for all FedEx, UPS and USPS deliveries. That's how I know a package was delivered since none of the delivery people can ring the doorbell when they place the box right under it. cool cheese

I don't think I want things I ordered put in a smelly trash can, but that's just me. Surprised no one has mentioned that aspect.

I am still not sure if i understand your logic.

OPTION 1: Package is placed at the front door. A thief goes to the front door and takes the package to their car.

OPTION 2: Note is placed on the front door alerting that the package is on the back porch. A thief goes to the front door, reads the note, heads to the back of the house, takes package and takes it to their car.

Option 2 seams like more work.

Package theft is usually a crime of convenience. Therefore it is more likely that a package will be stolen from the front of the house rather than the side (even if there is a small note on the door).

Leaving a note on the door is not a new concept. They've been doing it for many years and it seems to have worked pretty well. I'd guess that's why they keep doing it.

In theory, I like the idea of a text message, but it won't really help me because there is no one at home to retrieve the package. So, I appreciate the effort to make the package a little less accessible to those wandering by putting it in the garage or on the back steps. I've never had a package stolen from either location, but I have had one stolen from the front steps.

I haven't had anyone leave a package in the garbage can and admit I find this a bit.......surprising.

My point is that this doesn't seem a great way to cut down on theft. Not that it's easier to steal there. It's not easier or harder- just new. If criminals catch on, they now know a note may mean package in can and find it easier to grab under the slight cover of side of house. I don't think it fixes the problem and it raises new problems like garbage men throwing it away or it reeking/ getting dirty from your pails.

I don't know about you, but my trash can is not smelly.

This is SOMa, where all the trash cans smell above average.

LOL I am sure you trash pail smells wonderful. And it never gets wet inside from rain if the trash collector leaves top ajar. And it never has any garbage leak in it. It's all roses in there

Some notes on door say 'not delivered... will try tomorrow'

Order a trash can, that will show them

AMZN has devolved into Overstock.com level packaging. However, their customer service is great. I've gotten at least three free items this year just from complaining about the ridiculously poor arrival conditions.

I did that once. Then I threw out the old trash can, but they never pick it up - they just keep taking the lid off it and leaving it there.

Yep. I get a text from UPS and one from Amazon before the guy is back in the truck sometimes.

It was actually a hypothetical as I live in an apartment building with a dumpster. Which smells.

what delivery service is this? all of my amazon goodies come from ups, fedex, and usps, and less frequently lazership

It's amazon's own delivery service. . . the tracking information lists AMZL_US as the carrier. The slip on our door was orange and black with the Amazon logo all over it. It was the first time we ever received a package this way.

Amazon recently expanded same day delivery for parts of North Jersey. I suspect they use a messenger service to do this, and that's what the AMZL_US carrier indicates. I can't seem to find the link now, but I know I read about this recently.
