The Walz-Vance Debate
I'm not at all crazy about the fact that the fact-checking is left for the candidates to do. Vance is trying hard to be a worse liar than Trump. I do hope Walz calls him on it, and frequently.
They're leaving the mikes on, but I don't think that will matter much, since Trump is not involved. But you never know. Vance may decide to be unhinged.
I don't normally watch these things live, but I might watch this one.
I'll watch but I think it's highly unlikely to budge the electoral needle even one iota. Both candidates are sharp and good off-the-cuff speakers in their own way so I see a low risk of a face plant for either side.
I do think Vance is more likely to go on the offensive and take risks. We'll see how that plays out. But ultimately I think we need a memorable zinger like "you're no Jack Kennedy" for the debate to be more than a footnote in this race come Wednesday morning.
VP debates never determine outcomes of a presidential election. Just ask Dan Quayle.
I read speculation this morning that Vance would try the phony "stolen valor" nonsense again. I hope not, but you never know with Senator "Create Stories".

I agree completely. Considering how Harris kicked Trump's **** completely and it hardly budged the needle.
I doubt it will make any difference.
Perhaps a few percentage points of voters can be made aware that a guy as extreme as Vance will be a heartbeat away from the presidency with an octogenarian president who hates exercise and eats crap and it will convince them to vote Harris or stay home.
but not likely. At this point, nothing is denting the MAGA base, and nothing seems to be penetrating the consciousness of undecideds. At least nothing that's making them decide.
Well, I'm looking forward to this debate. I think Vance will get Walz's goat but who knows. I'm terrible at predicting the outcome of these things. I thought Kamala would flop and she held it together and Trump sounded like a drunken sailor.
I'll be watching along with Matt Taibbi and Walter Kirn again. They already sent the drinking rules.
The rules:
DRINK EVERY TIME…
- Walz mentions Project 2025.
- Vance questions Walz’s military record.
- Anyone says “Proud of my service.”
- Vance accuses Walz of favoring socialism or having ties to the Chinese Communist Party.
- Walz accuses Vance of fomenting anti-Haitian bigotry.
- Vance mentions a colorful family member. Double if the relative is armed or high or both.
- Walz brings up January 6th or claims democracy is on the ballot.
- Vance brings up the Minneapolis riots.
- Either candidate mentions the middle class or the working class. (Do not do shots of hard alcohol for this rule.)
- Either candidate uses folksy rhetoric or Midwestern slang, or the word “folks” is uttered, at all.
- Anyone says, “Right here in New York City.”
- Either candidate mentions Hurricane Helene or the situation in Asheville, North Carolina.
- Either candidate accuses the other of being insufficiently protective of Israel or Ukraine.
- A moderator fact-checks either candidate.
- You feel like driving off a cliff in despair.

imo, Vance could get most anybody's goat, but i have confidence that Walz's long experience with adolescents will stand him in good stead.
Vance is most likely going for the “swift boat” analogy… but he’s no dubya either…
JD believes all Haitians should be deported back to Hasia… I guess geography was not his strong suit…
This is a good debate, both guys are bringing it. Vance maybe with slight edge almost halfway through.
Questions are heavily biased in Vance's favor. If this debate opened with an abortion question it's 180 degrees different.
Walz totally stumbled on the question about China. Called himself a "knucklehead."

I agree and yet Vance still made several misleading statements.
Vance sounds like a Democrat. He is advocating for a lot of government investment in schools, mental health, etc. But his ticket wants to dismantle the department of education.
Vance trying to blame expensive housing market on illegal immigration.
I'm getting the impression that these guys wish they were running mates. They keep telling us they agree with each other. They are killing us with cordiality and I'm enjoying it. Too bad I don't like either one of them.

Vance refused to say that Trump lost the election when Walz asked him directly about it.
Walz’ self-assessment that he is not a good debater is true. He is fortunate that he is right on the issues.

CNN commentator just said that Vance’s job was to “launder” the MAGA agenda, particularly on abortion. I think he did that.

What time will the VP debate start and end?
The debate starts at 9 p.m. ET on Tuesday. It will run 90 minutes — the same length as the two presidential debates — and end at 10:30 p.m. ET.
Who is moderating the VP debate?
"CBS Evening News" anchor and managing editor Norah O'Donnell and "Face the Nation" moderator and chief foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan will moderate the debate.
Where is the VP debate?
The debate is taking place at the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City.
...What are the rules for the debate?
Both campaigns agreed to a 90-minute debate with two four-minute commercial breaks. Campaign staff are not allowed to interact with the candidates during the breaks.
There will be no audience — a measure also implemented during the two previous presidential debates.
At the event's start, the moderators will introduce the candidates in order of incumbent party, with Walz coming first. There will be no opening statements.
Walz will stand behind the lectern on the left side of the stage, which will be on the right side of viewers' screens. Vance will be at podium on the right side of the stage, but the left side of screens.
Candidates, who cannot bring pre-written notes or props on stage, will have two minutes to answer a question and two minutes to respond. They will be allowed one minute for rebuttals. At moderators' discretion, candidates may get an additional minute to continue a discussion.
Unlike the presidential debates, a candidate's microphone will not be muted when their opponent is speaking, but CBS News reserves the right to turn off the microphones.
Vance won a virtual coin toss on Thursday, opting to go second with his closing statement. Each candidate will have two minutes for their closing remarks.
No topics or questions will be shared with the campaigns in advance.
