What ml1 said plus Wright's defense has been quite good too. (Did you see me at the next table over ml1 yesterday?)

Mets starting pitching, especially Dickey, deserves recognition. When they find a dependable starter to take Pelfrey's place they will have a solid staff, capable of competing with Washington, Philly and the marlins.

PS-How about trading bad contracts--Jason Bay straight up for Josh Beckett?

They have been so much fun to watch so far this season. And that's all I want from them.

Yeah, I agree ... The Mets need to off-load Bay. Besides the fact, well, he stinks, he's also part of the "old regime" ... I don't see him having a place on this team ... He's a good guy, but it just didn't work ... Let's all move on.

Here's how I became a Mets fan:

Besides my Aunt Margorie, who taught me to love the Brooklyn Dodgers when I was three years old, I was the only non-Yankee fan in my Long Island family. Everybody else rooted for the always-dominant Y*nks, so when my Bums moved to L.A., I was teamless... until 1962, when I became an Original fan of the 2nd most-loveble franchise in major league history.

Anybody else come to the Mets this way???

Gack! Francisco blows another one as the Marlins win in the 9th on a walk-off grand slam. Did i remember hearing that Bobby Parnell has a new pitch making his fastball more effective? Why don't they try him as closer?

I love watching a young team win with patience and base hits. I am worried that when Bay comes back they will lose a hitter and pick up an automatic out. Today bummed me a little because they always seem to take their foot off the gas after winning something. "A 4-2 trip is good enough, no need to try for 5-1". Overall, though, they should be fun to listen to this year for a while.

My parents were die hard Brooklyn Dodgers fans ... I'm not one to argue balls and strikes, but, jeez, the ump WAS squeezing Francisco ...

today was not a lack of effort. the team played hard, but Francisco was awful. I can't believe he'll be closing any more after today. I don't think they have any option aside from Parnell.

I grew up watching the Mets with my dad.

Dad was a NY Giant fan because Jews from the Bronx didn't, as a rule of thumb, root for the Yankees. After the Giants moved west he said he didn't watch much baseball until the Mets were franchised.

Says Willie Mays was best player he ever saw. Was happy when Mays was traded to Mets in 1973, and wanted to see Mays play in one more World Series.

But he died the day Mets clinched the division.

I've always said closer is the most overrated role in all of sports (aside from one unnamed hurler who wears pinstripes). ESPN magazine actually has an article out now that says pretty much the same thing. Pretty much any average MLB pitcher should be able to convert at least 80% of save opportunities. That said, at this point in the season, Frank Francisco is far worse than an average MLB pitcher.

It's time for a new closer. I'd love to see Rauch or Parnell get a shot at it. Frankie's back-to-back blown saves and 6+ ERA are bad enough, but having a mental meltdown like he did today -- that's a guy who doesn't have the mental makeup to be a closer.

And yes, great to have a dedicated thread for Mets fans here. Brought my 7-month-old twin girls to their first Mets game last weekend, and got a great picture of them with Mr. Met.

My grandfathers and my father were Dodger fans and they too were teamless until 1962. The three of them were original Mets fans.

Of course being a daddy's girl I became a Met fan.

BTW, I didn't start to really appreciate the sport until I went to a Met game with my then boyfriend (now husband).

my dad was a NY Giants fan and he became a Mets fan when the team came into existence. my earliest baseball memories are of him watching games on Channel 9 with Lindsay Nelson, Bob Murphy, and Ralph Kiner. I've been a fan long enough to have been following them since they stank the first time.

Lots of articles recently about just how important (or not) the closer role is ... One arguement is that there are outs in the 1st - 8th inning that are just as important as any out in the 9th innings ...
