Heat Wave

The NWS has issued a Heat Advisory starting Tuesday for our area. Excessive heat should continue through at least Friday.

Today, warm, clear, and dry with a high in the upper 80s.

Tuesday through Friday, a building upper ridge will drive daytime temperatures into the low to mid 90⁰s each day. A southern wind will bring some humidity, and take the heat index ("feels like temperature") to the mid to upper 90⁰s. The same southern breeze will keep the nighttime lows in the upper 60⁰s or 70⁰s here in MAPSO.

Warm weather could continue through the weekend and into next week, although a cold front might bring some relief over the weekend (along with showers).

A heat wave is defined as heat index temperatures over 95⁰ for three or more days (this definition is location specific a heat wave in Texas is hotter than one in Maine. The use of the heat index takes humidity into account).

I expect that, in New Jersey, will will come close or break some June heat records this week. Please be mindful of the heat. Stay cool. Stay in the shade, and indoors during the midday heat. Check on the elderly and disabled, check on your neighbors. Drink plenty of fluids.

Because of the sea breeze, temperatures will be hotter in MAPSO than in the city, and likely hotter here than at the airport. Most apps report the airport temperature, so if your local thermometer says 97⁰ and the app says 92⁰, believe your thermometer not the app.

Heat Wave, Day One

Heat Advisory, Air Quality Alert ⚠️

Today will be the first day of a heat wave likely extending through Friday, with daily temperatures in the upper 90⁰s

The NWS has issued a Heat Advisory (text below) for today through Thursday which may be extended into Friday

There is also an Air Quality Alert (text below) for Ozone today, a pollutant caused in this case by the effect of sunlight on other pollutants, such a automobile exhaust. Sensitive people should take precautions

The weather station in Memorial Park registered 92, the Prospect Street station on the east side of the street just south of Parker registered 90.

Weekend weather will be more of the same with daytime highs in the low 90⁰s, Heat indexes in the upper 90⁰s, and a chance of afternoon showers.

Saturday June 22

Heat Advisory continues today and tomorrow

Air Quality Alert (Ozone) also continues today and tomorrow

Daytime highs will continue in the mid to upper 90⁰s, and could approach 100⁰

Scattered thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings could bring gusty winds and brief periods of heavy rain

Weather should moderate to some extent starting Monday, with highs in the 80⁰s most days next week

Sunday June 23

Heat Advisory continues one more day

Expect an Air Quality Alert by midday as the sun creates Ozone and levels rise again

Highs today in the mid 90⁰s with heat index near 100⁰ unless we get rain. Thunderstorms likely this afternoon and evening, with possibly two lines of storms moving through from the west. Slight chance storms could be severe, with main concern being high gusts.

Breezy this afternoon, with a warm southwesterly flow.

Heat abates a bit in the week to come, with highs in the mid 80⁰s most days. Could be hotter with thunderstorms Wednesday as another front moves through.

Thank, Max! Did we get rain last night? I’m in central Jersey coming back today and to know how much extra watering our tomatoes are gonna need.

We didn’t have not enough for your tomatoes. I have been watering mine morning and evening all week. It’s been too hot. It feels like Florida.

Not sure what the index says but my lawn is saying there’s a bit of a drought. It could use some rain.

We got some but not that much.

Not quite but worth watching

Monday July 8th

Heat Advisory Continues

Today and tomorrow, highs in the 90⁰s with heat index at or near 100⁰. Slight chance of an afternoon shower today and tomorrow.

Wednesday, continued hot and humid, with a growing chance of showers and a thunderstorm in the afternoon.

The effects of the remnants of Beryl are expected Thursday, mostly in the afternoon and evening, with the possibility of showers and thunderstorms. The bulk of this activity is expected to be north and west of our area but we'll keep an eye on it. Do not anticipate severe weather here from this system at this time but some storms may bring brief downpours.

Likely Air Quality Alert for Ozone again this afternoon.

Thanks Max and keep us in the loop with your Maplewoodstock Weekend forecast.   cheese

The first part of the year was so rainy, it will take some effort to reach a full-blown drought.

I respectfully disagee

Looks like most of the state is under unusually dry to moderate drought conditions. My color vision is impaired so forgive my difficulty seeing the gradations of color.

My grass turning brown is my indicator of dry conditions as it’s not possible for my lawn to receive less water than nature provides. It’s hard explaining to dead and dying blades of grass that everything is normal and fine oh oh

Annual rainfall is still ahead of averages.  But it only takes a hot dry month to make everything dry out and effectively be in drought conditions.  The rainfall earlier this year just means that water restrictions won't be needed as soon as might otherwise be the case.

I'm not saying it's not going to happen.  I'm just saying we would be a lot worse off right now if it hadn't rained so much earlier in 2024.

Even after the brutal heat over the past couple of weeks, one third of the state is still in the "normal" range.

That third of the state call Taylor Ham “Pork Roll” and root for the Phillies. “Normal?”  I think not.

Taylor Ham and Pork Roll are two similar but different products. Different spicing in each. Both are wonderful when fried just before the point of burnt to a crisp. T.H. is my favorite of the two.

And if ya want something different, go to the Amish Market in Flemington and ask for Ham Loaf. Fry that sucker up...... You're welcome.

Tuesday July 9th

Heat Advisory continues today and has been extended through Wednesday.

Air quality is Moderate this morning, and may approach Alert levels this afternoon for Ozone.

There is a slight chance of a shower this afternoon and again tomorrow.

Although the main track of the remnants of Beryl will be well west and then north of the MAPSO area, they will likely contribute to a general instability Thursday into Friday. Likely showers during this period could develop into thunderstorms, with gusty winds and localized downpours. Brief periods of heavy rain may result, but flooding is not expected beyond the usual field and street ponding. Timing at this point is Thursday afternoon through Friday evening.

We'll start looking at the weather for the weekend and for Maplewoodstock tomorrow.

Is there any likelihood of pollution from Canadian forest fire smoke repeating the 2023 orange air show in New Jersey this summer?
