Heat Wave
The NWS has issued a Heat Advisory starting Tuesday for our area. Excessive heat should continue through at least Friday.
Today, warm, clear, and dry with a high in the upper 80s.
Tuesday through Friday, a building upper ridge will drive daytime temperatures into the low to mid 90⁰s each day. A southern wind will bring some humidity, and take the heat index ("feels like temperature") to the mid to upper 90⁰s. The same southern breeze will keep the nighttime lows in the upper 60⁰s or 70⁰s here in MAPSO.
Warm weather could continue through the weekend and into next week, although a cold front might bring some relief over the weekend (along with showers).
A heat wave is defined as heat index temperatures over 95⁰ for three or more days (this definition is location specific a heat wave in Texas is hotter than one in Maine. The use of the heat index takes humidity into account).
I expect that, in New Jersey, will will come close or break some June heat records this week. Please be mindful of the heat. Stay cool. Stay in the shade, and indoors during the midday heat. Check on the elderly and disabled, check on your neighbors. Drink plenty of fluids.
Because of the sea breeze, temperatures will be hotter in MAPSO than in the city, and likely hotter here than at the airport. Most apps report the airport temperature, so if your local thermometer says 97⁰ and the app says 92⁰, believe your thermometer not the app.

There is also an Air Quality Alert (text below) for Ozone today, a pollutant caused in this case by the effect of sunlight on other pollutants, such a automobile exhaust. Sensitive people should take precautions

* IMPACTS...Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat
illnesses.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity
is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or
more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time.
Seniors and those with chronic health problems or mental health
conditions are at an increased risk. Homes without air conditioning
can be much hotter than outdoor temperatures.
Use air conditioning to stay cool at home or go to a place that has
air conditioning. If you don`t have home air conditioning, continue
to seek out cool spaces each day as long as it remains hot, and for
a few days after if your home is still hot. Check on vulnerable
friends, family members and neighbors.
To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! In cases of heat stroke call 9 1 1.

The peak of the heat wave is expected Thursday and Friday with heat
indices reaching 95 to around 103 during the afternoon hours. Heat
indices will be more marginal for Saturday, and peak around or just
over 95.

...AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM 11 AM TO 11 PM EDT TUESDAY...
The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has issued an
Air Quality Action Day for the following counties:
Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, and Union
from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Tuesday.
An Air Quality Action Day means that Ground Level Ozone within the
region may approach or exceed unhealthy standards.

The weather station in Memorial Park registered 92, the Prospect Street station on the east side of the street just south of Parker registered 90.

UPDATE: Pool Opening
Due to extreme heat forecast for an extended period, the Maplewood Community Pool will be open to all Maplewood residents, regardless of membership, from Tuesday, June 18 through Friday, June 21. Hours of operation are Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 4:00pm to 8:00pm, and Friday, 2:00pm to 8:00pm. Residents must bring a photo ID or proof of residency, and should bring a chair. Non-resident guests are only permitted when accompanied by pool members, and must purchase guests passes.
UPDATE: Heat Advisory
The National Weather Service has extended the Heat Advisory for our area until 8:00 pm on Thursday, June 20th. A Heat Advisory is issued when the combination of heat and humidity is expected to make it feel like it is 95 to 99 degrees for two or more consecutive days, or 100 to 104 degrees for any length of time. High temperatures are expected to last through the end of the week and possibly into the weekend.

Cooling Center
Any resident experiencing a heat emergency should call the Police Department at 9-1-1, (973) 762-1234, or visit 1618 Springfield Avenue. When necessary, the Police Department can open a cooling center for residents.

Heat Advisory continues today and tomorrow

Scattered thunderstorms in the afternoons and evenings could bring gusty winds and brief periods of heavy rain
Weather should moderate to some extent starting Monday, with highs in the 80⁰s most days next week

Heat Advisory continues one more day
Expect an Air Quality Alert by midday as the sun creates Ozone and levels rise again
Highs today in the mid 90⁰s with heat index near 100⁰ unless we get rain. Thunderstorms likely this afternoon and evening, with possibly two lines of storms moving through from the west. Slight chance storms could be severe, with main concern being high gusts.
Breezy this afternoon, with a warm southwesterly flow.
Heat abates a bit in the week to come, with highs in the mid 80⁰s most days. Could be hotter with thunderstorms Wednesday as another front moves through.

We didn’t have not enough for your tomatoes. I have been watering mine morning and evening all week. It’s been too hot. It feels like Florida.
Not sure what the index says but my lawn is saying there’s a bit of a drought. It could use some rain.
