Winter Weather Advisory for Likely Icing Friday 2/4

So if I need to be in Allentown PA by 4, I should be able to make it in rain if I leave by 1, and should be ready to book a hotel overtnight because I won’t be able to leave Allentown until 8:30 pm?

you will be driving in very hazardous conditions heading to Allentown now, and even if you left at 1 pm. Wait till later, the roads might be salted and better later this afternoon.

Maplewood OEM: Maplewood Under Winter Weather Advisory

Post Date:02/04/2022 9:54 AM

The National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory for northeast New Jersey through 7:00 pm this evening. Mixed precipitation is expected, with snow accumulations of under 1" and ice accumulations of 0.1'-0.2". Hazardous road conditions are anticipated and there is potential for frozen/downed tree limbs and wires.

Due to hazardous conditions, residents are advised to avoid the roads when possible. Caution should be used when walking on sidewalks, paths, and bridges. In the event of downed power lines or trees, residents should contact both their local energy provider and the Maplewood Police Department non-emergency line:

    JCP&L: 1-888-LIGHTSS (544-4877)
    PSE&G: 1-800-436-PSEG (7734)
    PD non-emergency line: (973) 762-1234

Downed wires should always be considered "live," and residents should remain at least 30 feet away.

In preparation for the storm, Maplewood Department of Public Works (DPW) staff have cleared Township basins and drains to prevent flooding. As precipitation begins to freeze this afternoon, DPW crews will be working to salt all Township roads, paths, and municipal lots. SOMA Schools will be dismissing early today and all after school clubs and CHS sporting activities have been cancelled. A copy of the early dismissal schedule is available on the School District website. All other Township services, including Jitney busses, will operate as normal throughout Friday and the weekend.

Maplewood PD will remain open overnight as an emergency heating center; the DeHart Community Center may be opened as a heating center in response to community need. In the meantime, those in need of heat or shelter should contact the Maplewood PD non-emergency line at (973) 762-1234.

Thank you all for your cooperation as we work to keep our community safe.

Don't trust your app for tempurature today. Your app tells you the temp at Newark Airport. Usually that is good enough, but at some point today as the front moves through there will very possibly be a difference of 5 - 10 degrees between here an the airport, with here being colder. As I write this, there is a 15 degree difference between here and Sparta in Sussex County, which is behind the cold front.

One could go to the Weatherunderground website and see what personal weather stations in Maplewood and South Orange are reporting at any moment. There are several in Maplewood and in South Orange. Generally the data is updated just a few seconds before your view, a if it’s not, it will say so. Once you’re on the initial page (the “Forecast” page, I believe) for any particular weather station, if you then click on “CHANGE”, you can see the temps being reported from all WU stations in the immediate area.

    For example:

    https://www.wunderground.com/weather/us/nj/south-orange

I don’t have the WU app, so I don’t know if the app does all that is available by going to the website.

    Friday Afternoon, 2/4/22

Temperatures continue to drop across the area. As temps approach 32, the likelihood of freezing rain will increase. This is most likely start to happen, if it does happen, over the next 2 - 3 hours, and the risk will continue until the rain stops this evening around 7:00.

Please be careful if you go out, and especially if driving. The rain has likely washed away any road treatment so roads could become slippery.

Rain ends this evening and bitter cold temps will settle in for the next 24 hours.

Sat morning, be alert for areas of black ice and generally slippery conditions today and tomorrow

Be alert for blocks of white ice too.  There are three thick bands of ice spanning the entire width of the roadway on Courter Avenue near Summit.  MPD has been notified.

Based on this a.m.'s dog walk, most of sidewalks and street are dry by me.  There is ice in the usual spots that have bad grading and runoff but, again, mostly dry.  No nightmare ice scenario by me.

It turned out to be less bad than I expected, fortunately.  Walked into the village this morning and the sidewalks were 99% dry.
