Let's not make this a political debate. Someone's favorite childhood show can't be revised without time travel. Heck, Little House on the Prairie is painfully cheesy for me to watch now, but I can't change that it was my favorite as a kid.

we can totally revise what we liked when we were younger. We don't have to deny we liked it. But we can look back with more wisdom and now realize how bad they were.
Most '80s comedy films are horrific if they are watched now. I liked "Sixteen Candles" when I saw it many years ago. Anyone who watches it now has to be aghast that rape was played for laughs in that movie.

I doubt anyone is aghast at Sixteen Candles but that would be a funny Saturday night live skit!
I used to watch Star Trek and The Wild Wild West with my dad back to back on Fridays when they were on Network. In my mind, WWW was a great show till I watched it again recently. Great, not. Fun, yes. I can enjoy watching it just for the nostalgia factor.

I can't speak to the characters but a show about a Southern county that has been ethnically cleansed of all non whites and where the main characters drive around in a car with the Stars and Bars on it? Yeah, that is a little bit racist.
But hey, you're from Ireland. What do you know about the centuries long, ugly history of racial conflict and oppression in the US? I am willing to give you a pass because you probably don't have the background to understand the context.

I was watching I dream of Jeannie a couple mornings ago. The show with no African Americans and a woman who lives in a bottle and calls her husband Master. Horrible!
Not having grown up in America, I am sure that you don't realize that the Stars and Bars is a deeply offensive symbol to many Americans. A bit like the swastika. We had a war around it.
How we view things, societal mores, how we mature -- these can all surely allow us to admit that some of what we watched as kids wouldn't be considered "appropriate" now ... some Sundays in the '60s, my sister and I would get up early to watch Davey & Goliath ... (Gumby & Pokey with a Christian theme woven in and a moral at the end -- you could find someone who'd have a problem with that today, but some station would still air it).
Our choices were so limited! At our beach house we had ONE channel -- ONE! -- ALL SUMMER!
I'm grateful I don't have to try to monitor any child's television choices today. TOO MUCH choice is what we have now. What's accepted now wasn't acceptable back then ... and how far do people get to push things before we say "enough").
But I pray for this at least once a week ... Please God, please .... Could SOMEONE find a way to make SNL funny again?

My favorite shows were mostly mystery/detective shows.
Always found the British series more interesting.

And of course the comedies. I’m much more interested in British tv than American tv.
I'm not one to say people shouldn't watch or read or listen to any work of culture or art. But I think it's a bit flip, and a missed opportunity, to skip over the uncomfortable aspects of art, culture, and those who make them. For older works, especially, it's especially interesting to reflect on how culture changes over time. I watched Star Trek TOS a couple years back, and that was definitely interesting. I'm doing TNG now, which in some ways is even more interesting since that's a series I actually have first hand memories of watching to compare and contrast with.
I do wonder what Charles, or his old neighbors, would think of a show where a couple of good old boys drove around rural Ireland in a car painted to look like an Orange Order flag.

Fun fact: My adult son is a big fan of Scott Porter's (of Friday Night Lights). They share a hobby, and have hung out together several times, including sharing an AirBNB for one of the big events.
