iPad Pencil

I just got a new iPad 9 gen to replace my 5th gen.  A prime reason was to be able to use a stylus, like Apple Pencil, for photo editing. Having never used anything like this I need help in deciding which stylus/pencil to buy.

The Apple pencil is $100;  NYT top rated Zagg pro ~$50.  A surf around azn shows off-brands in the $25 range.

If anyone has experience, especially with PP and a preference, I’d appreciate your insights.

Thanks so much,

Apollo T.

I find the Apple pencil very lame and it's always falling off our iPad.  Would definitely gamble on a cheaper one if it has good reviews... even if it doesn't stick to the side of the tablet.

i got an Apple pencil when I upgraded my gen 5 ipad to an ipad air a month ago. And it does a wonderful job of adhering to the case. As my cat loves styluses, pencils, pens etc, he hasn’t gotten his paws on this device yet. I have zero skills, but it has given me the ability to scribble captions, etc. Is  there a book out there for apple pencil for dummies?

@dave, @mtierney

Thanks for your time and thoughts.

@dave, consider getting a cover/case/bluetooth keyboard. Current models have a built in slot for a pencil.  I was bit lost w/o  one while deciding on which to buy.  Also, aside from your problem are you happy with your pencil?

@mtierney,  go to Youtube and search for “ Apple pencil”.  You will find a bunch of instructional videos. I often do this at a table while using a tv.  Pause video so you can follow along.

My iPad case has a nice slot for the pencil which positions it correctly against the iPad to recharge.  Works great!

Thanks for your time.

This my third iPad and third bluetooth kb/case.  Almost all current cases for iPads have a slot for a pencil.  My second case was from Fintie ~$25.  Current model is $45, given that almost doubling in price i was hoping to find something a bit less expensive.  Way off-brand cases aren’t that much lower so I decided to stick with the devil I know.  It’s done well for me since 2017.

With regard to the iPencil a search around the family turned up one that may be given to me IF it can be found.

I have no commercial need for getting an Apple pencil, just an obsessive need for aggravation apparently.

While “playing” around yesterday’s rainy day, on MOL no less!, I was using the small keyboard which “floats” on the screen. I found it very user-unfriendly and exited the program — or tried to that is.

The full size keyboard would not return, even after a long session with two Apple techs trying a dizzying number of “fixes” to no avail?

Mtierney, Luddite, stumped the hiarchry at Apple!

After an hour plus on the phone, I was advised to shut the ipad air down and then reboot. The tiny keyboard was gone, and the regular keyboard in place!

I had been thinking of doing that very thing earlier, but figured there should be a technical way to exit the floating little keyboard. The incident occurred while on MOL. but would appear on screen in  all other websites I opened.

Apple was stumped and suggested the rebooting.

no other Apple pencil user has/had  this issue?

@Apoll_T  I really don't use the pencil much and don't have the attached keyboard.

@mtierney - When in doubt reboot/restart your device to see if that fixes whatever problem you are having. You did the right thing (and likely should have tried it sooner.)  oh oh
