Firewood delivery

Who do you like? How much for a cord of wood? I am having a hard time reaching my regular guy!

Paul Jost. I believe $159 a cord delivered and stacked.

I use Carmine. I only get a quarter of a chord delivered. $80 and he stacks it. Nicest guy in the world. Replies quickly. Always happy with the quality.

I had a cord delivered by The Yard in Scotch Plains.  Stacked.  Pricey at $320 but the largest “cord” I’ve had delivered.  It’s truly 4’ by 4’ by 8’.

This isn’t all of it.  There are probably another 40 pieces on another stack.

Thanks for the recos here. I’ve used Paul Jost in the past but lost his number, so I figured I’d take the opportunity to see what others were like.

Before this thread appeared, I called Brennan’s in August, thinking I’d get a head start. They said they’d put me on their list and let me know when they’d deliver. End of September, I checked back. Gave my info again and got the same assurance. Tried one more time a couple of weeks ago, and still nothing.

I checked out The Yard online, but I’m two miles outside their free delivery radius, so I’d be paying $50 extra for a $130 half cord (according to the website). I understand that, and $180 is still in the ballpark, but paying close to 40 percent for delivery just ... I don’t know. Not a big deal, though, and I’d have gotten over it if I’d needed to.

I didn’t need to because I called Carmine, based on Soul29’s post. He did indeed reply quickly, and a couple of days later I have a half cord for $160. Soul is right that he’s a nice guy. Quality and quantity seem better than PJ’s, but the price may be higher, too.

I’d recommend either Carmine DeMatteo or Paul Jost.

Just had a cord of wood delivered by Paul Jost (who we usually use), $200 (not stacked).

After you stack it, do you actually measure to see if you actually got a cord?

I found his cord to be super small.  The Yard gave me a full cord but for top dollar.  $320 delivered and stacked but truly 4’ x 4’ x 8’.

The half cord I got from Carmine DeMatteo filled my 8’ x 4’ rack, but the logs are 17-18” long, so not a true half cord. Paul Jost’s wood was an inch or two shorter, as I recall, and maybe a little shy of the top of my rack — but, again, at a lower price.

Shorter logs are a better fit for my fireplace than two-footers anyway, and I feel both men gave me value for my money.

Well, I went out and measured the stacked firewood today, and then did some calculating.  Indeed, it was a bit short of a cord.  The pieces were 16-18" long (as DaveSchmidt said).  If they had been 2 feet long, it would have been a full cord.  I contacted Paul and he was very helpful, saying he delivers 500 pieces of wood per cord.  But he was very concerned and wanted to make sure that I was satisfied, so he is bringing me more wood.  All in all, I am satisfied with his service and his price.

It looks like what is being delivered is a face cord.

It's actually illegal in NJ (with the exception of the bags of wood that you can buy at Kings and the like) to sell wood by anything other than a cord or a fraction thereof (and saying it's a cord and delivering 500 pieces does not cut it).
