February Cold ... and Snow!

First February weekend, still not expecting any snow to speak of but Friday night and Saturday are likely to be very cold, with wind chills below zero.

Colder than last Christmas Eve?

I did overnight homeless outreach that night and it's the coldest I've had to endure in a number of years.

It was so cold that my car door handle broke off.

That must have sucked.

Yes, it did. It was so cold that all the car doors were frozen shut. I yanked on one of the plastic door pulls too hard I guess, and it snapped off. I was able to find a replacement online very inexpensively and my mechanic painted and installed it so I'm as good as new. (As good as new as a 2005 Altima with 155k miles can be.)

...ICY CONDITIONS POSSIBLE ON ROADS THIS MORNING...

Light snow in association with a weak area of low pressure will gradually come to and end over the next hour or two. With ground temperatures in the 20s and lower 30s, icy conditions are possible, especially on untreated and elevated surfaces. Use extra caution if traveling this morning, allowing plenty of stopping distance.
Temperatures rise above freezing by the early afternoon.

It was nice to see the dusting on everything.

How are the roads? I got a little 'possibly icy until 8 or 9am' weather indicator.

Hi Max,

I am seeing extreme wind chill warnings all around us for the weekend, but not actually in NJ.  Am I being mislead by CNN?

The Ledger is saying cold similar to Christmas Eve, with gusts that could make it feel like -25.

...Below Zero Wind Chills Friday Night into Saturday Morning...

An arctic cold front will move through late tonight, bringing some
of the coldest air of the season. Along with gusty winds approaching
40 mph, this will produce wind chills of 5 to 15 below zero Friday
night into Saturday morning. Some isolated values of less than 15
below are possible. With an anomalously warm winter, many are not
acclimated to such cold temperatures and such cold wind chills could
result in hypothermia if precautions are not taken.

And then, bang, right back to 40's and 50's and Sunday into next week.  Which is when we will discover if any pipes have frozen and cracked.

I opened up my sink cabinets so I don't forget to do it tonight...

Actually I think it’s colder than last Christmas Eve. No dog walkers out yet.

Brought hot water and both wet and dry food out to my 2 feral cats who were snug in their heated houses. If anyone needs a regular feral cat shelter message me and I'll help locate one or tell you how to make one. Its brutal out there and we no longer have St. Hubert's doing TNR or rescue! Keep your eyes open for pregnant community cats.

But on a positive note, this was 2 years ago.

On mornings like this I worry about the abandoned cat who has settled into our backyard. As usual, she came out of her shelter and rolled around on the cold concrete asking for a belly rub.

Even though she seemed to be fine I still put a heated corn bag in her shelter for warmth and put a little sugar in her water so it wouldn't freeze so quickly.

Will this winter go down as the least snow ever in our area?  I think we've had two dustings in Mapso.

From nj.com:

So far this winter Newark has officially recorded 0.1" of snow.  I have also recorded 0.1" here is Maplewood.

Almost a clean sheet so far, as those footballers from across the pond would say.

Don't want to jinx it - but we're looking fairly snow-free for February.  (March 3 shows a threat of snow - but who can forecast that far out.)

I don't really think this is good news.

we might end up with a blizzard in March.
