How many contractors have you consulted? Seems high to me. Is it the lift-up Bilco door type?
Bilco makes two types. The flat type lies on a foundation that is sloped. The other type has sides and sits on a flat foundation. The trick is how well do they fit. 3k sounds high for a direct replacement, but as soon as something is the wrong size that number sounds better.
Yes, the lift-up type. I'm contacting a few more in the next couple days.
Call Yeager Lumber in Union 908-686-0070, they sell and install these too. I can't remember the exact quote they gave me, but it was around $1, 200 a few months ago. I never really followed up or tried to get another quote elsewhere for other reasons, but I think the price may have been reasonable. There is another lift-up door type by Bilco Co. which is the Ultra C model, on the pricey side, but its not metal but a more decorative type door in case you were looking for something other than the usual metal basement door. Hope this helps.
You may have read my Rec which was Miele on 22. They were custom and only about half that price. Granted it was prob around 2014 or so but still.
I had tall wood doors to my basement and the cost to replace them with metal was astronomical. I am talking close to $8,000. And yes, I got more than one estimate. The doors would have be custom made and then the contractor would have to install them. We got someone to replace wood with wood at a fraction of the cost. Looks great.

Hi, I was given the price of $3,000 to install metal cellar doors, which would not require any masonry work. That seems rather high, but last posts on this are from 2014. Wondering if anyone has a more recent price. Thanks
